Recuerdo perfectamente el acogedor ambiente de los mercadillos de navidad en Alemania, donde tuve la suerte de vivir un año. La ciudad se transforma en pueblo, se llena de cabañas, juguetes de madera, regalos tradicionales, millones de adornos de navidad elaborados, dulces típicos, y claro, el famoso Glühwein, mezcla de vino con especias, dulce y caliente, mmm el olor a canela! Es lo mejor para combatir el frío y notar, también por dentro, el calor de la Navidad!
I perfectly remember the friendly atmosphere of Christmas markets in Germany, where I was lucky enough to live for a year. The city turns into a town, becomes full of cabins, wood toys, traditional handcrafts, millions of hand-made Christmas decorations, typical pastries and confections, the famous Glühwein, a mix of wine and spices, sweet and served warm. Mmm the smell of cinnamon! It’s the best thing to fight off the cold and feel, also inside, the warmth of Christmas!
En España no tenemos tan arraigada esta tradición tan europea. Si es verdad que las calles se adornan y salimos a comprar como locos, a tomar algo con los amigos, compañeros de trabajo o de clase; pero perdonad, no es lo mismo. No es tan tradicional, tan auténtico navideño, quizá sea porque Santa Claus no viene del mediterráneo, aquí no hay tanta nieve... por qué será?
In Spain, we don't have such a deeply-rooted European custom. Yes, it's true that we do decorate the streets, go out shopping any old how, go out with friends, class or office-mates, but sorry to tell you, that it is not the same. It is not so traditional, so genuine Christmas, maybe because Santa Claus doesn't come from the Mediterranean, maybe here there's not much snow... why could it be?
